Channel A’s ‘Witch’ Park Jin-young jumped into the Han River to avoid the ‘Law of Death’.
In the 7th episode of Channel A’s weekend drama ‘Witch’ aired on the 8th, Dong-jin (Park Jin-young) fought to collect data and directly verify hypotheses to reduce the errors of the ‘Law of Death’ surrounding Mi-jeong (Noh Jung-ui).
Dong-jin worked as a delivery person at the mart only on Tuesdays to match Mi-jeong’s routine of ordering daily necessities every Tuesday. Finally, when Mi-jeong’s order came in, he headed to her with a trembling heart. The conditions to meet Mi-jeong within 10 meters for 10 minutes were limited, but Dong-jin enjoyed that ordinary time spent checking the delivery items and chatting with her.
Thus, the first meeting between the two lasted for about 8 minutes. Since it didn’t exceed 10 minutes, nothing happened to Dong-jin. After that, he entered Mi-jeong’s space and timed himself, testing over several days. Up to 10 minutes, there were no abnormalities. Then he tried exceeding 10 minutes. As expected, Dong-jin twisted his ankle and fell down the stairs. He verified the hypothesis that being with Mi-jeong for more than 10 minutes within 10 meters was dangerous.
The 10-minute delivery meetings continued, and at some point, Mi-jeong also began to look forward to this time. It had been a long time since she had a conversation with someone other than her only friend Eun-sil (Jang Hee-ryeong). Although it was a short time of just over 10 minutes, this moment became special for Mi-jeong as well. When Dong-jin read the items on the receipt one by one, and Mi-jeong repeated them back to confirm, it created a strangely warm feeling as if they were sharing small daily lives.
However, an unexpected variable occurred that day. Mi-jeong, who had always paid in cash, handed over a card. Dong-jin, who hadn’t brought the card terminal, was momentarily flustered and tried to rush back. But Mi-jeong stopped him and began to look for cash inside her house. As time passed, Dong-jin grew anxious. As soon as he received the cash from Mi-jeong, he quickly exited the building, and fortunately, it hadn’t exceeded 10 minutes. However, at the moment of relief, a sign that was swaying above the building fell. This time, he injured his hand.
Dong-jin had clearly followed the ‘10m and 10 minutes’ rule. Yet, the fact that the ‘Law of Death’ was triggered meant that there was another rule. Reflecting on that day, Dong-jin thought that the number of conversations might be a variable. To verify this, he counted the number of conversations while checking the delivery items.
Before he knew it, they had exchanged seven lines of conversation, and about 6 minutes had passed when Mi-jeong’s gaze fell on Dong-jin’s injured hand. She shrank back, worried that it was because of her. Dong-jin made up an excuse that he had injured it while exercising, and despite exceeding ten lines of conversation, just seeing her relieved face was enough. The moment he turned away, he was involved in a motorcycle accident. It was dangerous to have more than ten lines of conversation with her.
In this way, Dong-jin proved the ‘Law of Death’ with no part of his body uninjured. Even when Eun-sil warned him that he could really die, he could not stop now. And as warned by Eun-sil, he faced a dangerous moment. It was the day Mi-jeong went on her monthly bus trip. Wanting to see what she saw, Dong-jin boarded the same bus. The distance between them inside the bus was about 11 meters, which was precarious, but just being with her was enough.
However, after Mi-jeong gave her seat to an elderly woman and moved towards Dong-jin, a variable occurred. Now, the distance between them was less than 5 meters. To make matters worse, traffic congestion blocked the road. As they approached 10 minutes, the situation worsened. A heavy downpour accompanied by lightning struck, and a truck loaded with steel pipes was precariously stopped right next to the bus Dong-jin was on. Dong-jin began to feel anxious about how the ‘Law of Death’ would be triggered this time, and ultimately opened the window and attempted to escape, distancing himself from her.
At that moment, Mi-jeong’s gaze landed directly on Dong-jin. The wind and rain had blown off his hat, revealing his face. Then something unexpected happened. Mi-jeong called out his name, “Lee Dong-jin.” Mi-jeong knew Dong-jin’s name. With the 10m and 10 minutes rule, and now knowing his name, Dong-jin had violated too many rules at once, but he trusted the data and patterns he had accumulated.
In the middle of winter, there had never been a record of lightning striking the Han River. Thus, he declared a challenge to the ‘Law of Death’ by shouting, “Come chase me!” and jumped into the Han River without hesitation, raising curiosity for the next episode to its peak.
