Kian84, BTS Jin, and actress Ji Yeo-eun have come together for ‘The Crazy Guesthouse’.
On the morning of the 8th, a production presentation for Netflix's variety show ‘The Crazy Guesthouse’ Part 1 ‘Early Check-in’ was held at Community House Masil in Jung-gu, Seoul. PD Jung Hyo-min, PD Lee So-min, and PD Hwang Yoon-seo attended.
‘The Crazy Guesthouse’ is a new concept variety show where Kian84, Jin, and Ji Yeo-eun engage with guests at a guesthouse on Ulleungdo, flowing with Kian's unique ideas. PD Jung Hyo-min from ‘Hyori's Homestay’, writer Yoon Shin-hye, and Kian84 have teamed up for this project.
PD Jung Hyo-min stated, “Kian84 runs a guesthouse for youth on Ulleungdo, and it’s a variety show filled with unexpected situations with staff Jin and Ji Yeo-eun.” He added, “While it is a reality show about accommodation, Kian84's unique character means that most of what you would expect from a typical accommodation reality show is absent, filled instead with things you wouldn't imagine.”
PD Lee So-min mentioned, “It’s strangely well-run and seems like a place you’d want to experience at least once. The elements designed by Kian will be a continuous surprise,” while PD Hwang Yoon-seo explained, “The name itself is ‘crazy’. Unpredictable situations keep occurring, but there’s romance within it. It’s a program where you fall asleep while looking at the stars and wake up to pouring rain, embodying ‘Kian-style romance’.”
How did ‘The Crazy Guesthouse’ come to be?
PD Jung Hyo-min shared, “After ‘Hyori's Homestay’, I’ve been thinking about what we could do if we made a modern version of a guesthouse variety show. Since we worked with a remarkable and special figure like Lee Hyori, I kept wondering if it would be more fun than ‘Hyori's Homestay’ with any main cast.”
He continued, “The initial planning for this program was before Kian84 received the entertainment award. I thought, ‘Can Kian84 do this?’ I felt that with Kian84, it would flow in a different direction from existing guesthouse programs. At that time, Kian84's challenge to run a marathon was a hot topic, and I felt that it wasn’t just bizarre and special, but also responsible. I thought we could create a fun entertainment show where everyone ends up happy.”
What sets ‘The Crazy Guesthouse’ apart?
PD Jung Hyo-min explained, “Rather than differences with Lee Hyori, I saw many similarities. As a host welcoming guests to a house he designed, he constantly checks if they are sleeping well or eating well. Kian84 himself didn’t expect that. From the first day, he was worried about how to fix the house. He observed the guests in a different way than Lee Hyori.”
PD Hwang Yoon-seo stated, “We recruit people who can run the accommodation well, but the biggest difference is that we recruited the most mismatched person. Also, the fact that Kian84 designed the house himself is a huge differentiator that you won’t experience anywhere else.”
PD Lee So-min added, “I think the appeal lies in the part where ‘I don’t want to go, but I want to see others go.’”
‘The rookie’ owner Kian84, the capable ‘jack-of-all-trades’ BTS Jin, and the passionate youngest Ji Yeo-eun, who even got a boating license for the guesthouse, are all together.
PD Jung Hyo-min noted, “Kian84 is a unique and original character, so the color changes depending on the combination. I thought the support staff would be important. I wanted to find someone who could show a different side of Kian84 while also having their own distinct color without being overshadowed or swept away by him.”
He continued, “Ji Yeo-eun was recommended by Kian84, and I thought we could see the MZ generation through her. Jin, as a global idol from BTS, hasn’t shown even a tenth of his human side to the public yet. I thought it would be great if we could bring out Jin’s true self. It wasn’t easy to recruit him since it was before his military discharge, but fortunately, Jin wanted to meet Kian84, so we were able to coordinate schedules and have him join.”
PD Hwang Yoon-seo expressed, “It’s a combination we’ve never seen before, so I had high expectations. We didn’t tell the participants who recruited them. I wanted to see their genuine emotions when they first met.” He added, “As a result, Kian84, Jin, and Ji Yeo-eun showcased an unexpected sibling chemistry that exceeded expectations.”
‘The Crazy Guesthouse’ will release a total of 9 episodes over 3 weeks, starting from the 8th with 3 episodes each week.
