Sometimes sweet, sometimes spicy, ‘Princess of Genji’ Unis has transformed into a more honest and confident ‘Swicy Girl’. With a variety of recipes, ‘Mapdal Doll’ Unis is fully prepared to captivate fans' hearts with the ‘taste of reversal’.
On the afternoon of the 15th, a media showcase for the release of Unis' (UNIS) second mini-album ‘SWICY’ was held at Yes24 Live Hall in Gwangjin-gu, Seoul.
“Unis is finally making a comeback with SWICY,” said Jin Hyun-joo, sharing her thoughts on the comeback. “Since it’s been a while since our last album, we prepared hard. We filled the album with songs that everyone will love, from the title track to the included songs,” she stated.
Having expressed Gen Z's quirkiness with ‘SUPERWOMAN’ and confidence with ‘You Don’t Know’, Unis maximizes her unique liveliness through ‘SWICY’, which embodies both the spicy and sweet reversal image while also radiating loveliness.
Unis' mini album ‘SWICY’ is a neologism combining ‘Spicy’ and ‘Sweet’, showcasing a unique concept that reflects the global trend of blending spiciness and sweetness through music.
Oh Yoon-ah, who pointed out ‘new changes’ as Unis' unique feature, emphasized about the ‘SWICY’ album, “It contains a different look from the last album. In that sense, it could be an opportunity to attract attention. Through this album, we will show the unique ‘swicy charm’ of K-pop,” she stated.
The title track ‘SWICY’ allows listeners to savor the sweet yet spicy reversal flavor. With a lively rhythm and cute arcade sounds, the lyrics liken the eight members' ‘Mapdal’ charm to food, expressing Unis' unpredictable liveliness.
Unis also emphasized the ‘sweetness’ and ‘spiciness’ that the group possesses with the keyword ‘SWICY’. Lim Seo-won said, “In daily life, we are sweet, but our stage charm is spicy,” while Jin Hyun-joo added, “Unis may look sweet and lovely on the outside, but I think our growth process has been spicy. Since it’s been a while since our last comeback, we prepared hard. Please look forward to ‘SWICY’, which is made by sweet Unis going through a spicy practice process,” she hinted.
Through this album, Unis returned as an unpredictable teenage girl, revealing her ‘SWICY’ charm that is sometimes ‘Sweet’ and sometimes ‘Spicy’. Regarding this, Bang Yoon-ha expressed, “While preparing for SWICY, we thought a lot about how to show sweetness and spiciness. We worked hard to ensure that our stage could showcase our reversal charm, and I hope you will pay close attention to that,” she expressed her expectations.
Unis expressed her desire to earn the title of ‘the representative of Mapdal’ through this activity, stating, “There may be many concepts of ‘spicy and sweet’, but Unis is the only group that has introduced the keyword ‘SWICY’. I want to be recognized as the ‘Mapdal Doll’ that comes to mind when you think of SWICY,” she revealed her aspirations.
Not only did they attempt musical changes, but Unis' school look styling, which was tried for the first time since their debut, visually represents the story of this album. Breaking away from the typical school uniform framework, the styling reminiscent of cheerleaders completes Unis' unique high teen sensibility.
Unis also had strong supporters alongside them. The team that created the debut album's track ‘Dream Girl’ and produced numerous K-pop hit songs, Vendors, created a unique synergy with ‘SWICY’, while Brother Su contributed tracks like ‘What Are You Doing? (What Are You Doing?)’ and ‘DDANG!’ to further highlight Unis' unique liveliness. Additionally, they captured a lyrical yet fresh sentiment with songs like ‘Good Feeling’ and ‘Spring Rain’.
With the goal of becoming the ‘Mapdal Doll’, Unis' current objective is to achieve first place on music broadcasts. Bang Yoon-ha confessed, “Through this activity, we want to achieve first place on all music broadcasts. Although we received many awards last year, we have not yet achieved first place on music broadcasts. If we can achieve first place on all music broadcasts through ‘SWICY’, I would be very happy.”
Unis expressed her expectations for the ‘World Tour’ scheduled for the first half of the year along with achieving first place on music broadcasts. Na Na said, “I want to show our sweet charm to many people through this album activity. We are also planning an Asia tour in the first half of the year, and I want to meet many people around the world, beyond Korea, Japan, and the Philippines, and create joyful memories,” she said with a bright smile.
Meanwhile, Unis will first showcase their new song on the ‘SWICY’ fan showcase held at 8 PM.
