Hwanhee stepped away from his usual singing style and competed with traditional trot.
In the 8th episode of MBN’s ‘Current King of Singers 2’ aired on the 21st, the stage for the second round of the semifinals was presented, capturing the viewers' attention. In the previous first round of the semifinals, Hwanhee ranked 7th in the interim standings, placing him in the top tier.
Before the stage, Hwanhee was shown visiting his family home. Curious about his mother’s honest opinion on his performances so far, Hwanhee asked, and his mother responded with a candid and witty remark, saying, “It doesn’t really sound that R&B. But it doesn’t sound that trot either,” bringing laughter to the viewers.
In this competition, Hwanhee chose the traditional trot song “Samo” by Nah Hoon-a, drawing attention. Having established himself as a leading R&B vocalist for a long time, there was curiosity about how he would express the song while still retaining his unique R&B style.
On this stage, Hwanhee completely set aside his R&B singing style filled with his own emotions and reinterpreted traditional trot in his own way. His deep emotions and rich vocal skills maximized the emotional line of the song, reminding everyone once again of his status as the prince of trot and renewing the legendary stage.
Seol Woon-do, who watched Hwanhee’s performance, said, “Thank you. I think he is a precious person who can write a new history for our trot in the future,” responding to Hwanhee’s efforts. Nam Jin also praised him, saying, “With this voice and emotion, he is a singer with great potential for the future.”
On this day, Hwanhee received a total of 339 points out of 360 from the celebrity judging panel, quickly securing a top position and surprising both the current contestants and the celebrity judges.
