Director Bong Joon-ho shed tears while mentioning the late actor Lee Seon-kyun.
On the 18th, Bong Joon-ho appeared on MBC's current affairs program ‘Questions with Son Seok-hee’.
On that day, Bong Joon-ho expressed his affection for Lee Seon-kyun, with whom he worked on the film ‘Parasite’, saying, “He was someone I worked with, and many memories come to mind. No matter what anyone says, he was a good person. He was a great actor.”
In December 2023, Lee Seon-kyun passed away during a police investigation related to drug use allegations. In response, on January 29, a coalition of 29 cultural and artistic organizations formed the ‘Cultural and Artistic Workers’ Solidarity Conference’ and issued a statement titled ‘The Demands of Cultural and Artistic Workers Facing the Death of Actor Lee Seon-kyun’. During the announcement of the statement, Director Bong Joon-ho urged thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the leak of internal information regarding the deceased’s investigation, stating, “I call for a thorough investigation into whether there were any issues with the police's investigation security during the two-month period from the initial leak to the time of death.”
Regarding the announcement of the statement, Director Bong Joon-ho explained, “As a colleague who worked together, it was a situation that I felt was only right to address,” but also expressed, “At the same time, I felt sorry and ashamed for not doing it sooner.”
He added, “Before such an unfortunate situation occurred, I felt a sense of guilt about why I couldn’t do it sooner,” and he was seen shedding tears.
