Singer and actress IU has once again set a new standard in her acting with 'My Name is Not Kim Sam-soon'.
On the 28th, the Netflix series 'My Name is Not Kim Sam-soon' released its final act, concluding its grand journey. IU, who has led the series, has received praise for her captivating narration and the intricate portrayal of her character's emotions from Act 1 to Act 4.
In Act 4, significant events that penetrate Geum-myung's life unfold, showcasing IU's detailed emotional performance. In the childbirth scene, she delicately depicted the mother's emotional changes from labor pains to the moment she hears her baby's cries. Her eyes reflected fear and desperation when told the baby wasn't moving, maximizing the emotions, and even in a physically exhausting situation, she portrayed the struggle to push through until the end, realistically acting out the moment when she completely loses her strength and her head falls back.
IU also convincingly expressed Geum-myung's strong side as she tries to protect her family. To reassure her parents at the hospital, she delivered the line in a calm tone, "Dad, don't worry~ Don't be scared. I'm here. I'll be here, you know?" portraying the image of a reliable daughter. Later, upon learning about her father Kwan-sik's illness, she delicately captured the intersection of deep anxiety and the effort to remain calm through her trembling lips, flowing tears, and wavering gaze, providing a strong emotional impact.
In 'My Name is Not Kim Sam-soon', IU infused authenticity into the drama by expressing different emotions in each scene. From Act 1 to Act 4, her performance was captivating, allowing viewers to feel the immense affection she had for this work. She meticulously adjusted her gaze, breath, expressions, tone, and gestures to create a three-dimensional character in 'Ae-soon' and 'Geum-myung'.
Even within the same character, she expressed different nuances in each scene, maximizing the character's diverse aspects. She perfectly embodied the confident image of a career woman, the warmth of a mother, the daughter still throwing tantrums at her parents, and the dependable side of her character. Her repeated narration also shone through. The same line, "When one door closes, another one opens," gained depth with varying emotional tones and nuances depending on the situation, drawing the audience deeper into the story.
Through 'My Name is Not Kim Sam-soon', IU has taken another leap as an actress. She flawlessly handled the new challenge of playing dual roles, expanding her acting depth with immersive narration and detailed performance, leaving a strong impression on viewers.
IU expressed her thoughts on participating in the project through her agency, stating, "It was a great honor to portray the characters of young Ae-soon and Geum-myung in 'My Name is Not Kim Sam-soon', which contains numerous stories from various generations."
She continued, "Just like the people of Dodong-ri who quietly share comfort and support during difficult times, I hope this warm work will be remembered as one that stays by many viewers for a long time. Thank you so much to all the viewers who have passionately supported us," expressing her affection for the work and deep gratitude.
IU will continue her active career as an actress with her next project, 'The 21st Century Great Lady'. In the drama, she plays the role of Seong Hee-joo, the second daughter of the number one conglomerate family, possessing outstanding beauty, intelligence, and a strong competitive spirit.
