Shin Hyun-jun hoped that ‘Ghost Police’, which he made with the late Kim Soo-mi, would be a warm gift for the audience.
On the afternoon of the 13th, a screening and press conference for the movie ‘Ghost Police’ was held at CGV Yongsan I-Park Mall in Seoul, attended by director Kim Young-jun and actor Shin Hyun-jun.
‘Ghost Police’, which became the last work of the late Kim Soo-mi, who passed away last year, is a family comedy about a police officer who, after experiencing an unexpected disaster without ever hitting the jackpot, gains a trivial ability and gets entangled in unexpected events with his family.
Before the press conference, a tribute video for the late Kim Soo-mi was released. Following her mention of “how to remember Kim Soo-mi” on the variety show ‘Master in the House’, messages written on sketchbooks by Shin Hyun-jun, Jung Jun-ho, and other cast and staff of ‘Ghost Police’ were revealed.
Shin Hyun-jun, who maintained a close relationship with the late Kim Soo-mi beyond that of a mother-son relationship while working together on the films ‘Barefoot Gi-bong’ and the ‘Family Honor’ series, expressed his heartfelt feelings, saying, “I will live remembering the grace of my beloved mother who always loved and embraced her inadequate son.”
In the film, Shin Hyun-jun plays a legendary police officer who falls from grace due to an incident and, while living with his daughter and mother, suddenly gains a trivial ability.
Shin Hyun-jun said, “Today, I filmed MBC’s ‘All-Seeing Assistant’ with Jung Jun-ho from the morning. While talking about my mother and various things, I came to the theater, and when I saw the poster with my mother, it was very overwhelming. My mother had said the day before the release that we should do a lot of programs together and promote it, but there was only one chair in front of the poster, which was very overwhelming.”
He continued about the late Kim Soo-mi, saying, “Although we met through the movie, we lived like a real mother and son. ‘Ghost Police’ was born because my mother wanted to create a film that would make us happy and allow the audience to comfortably laugh while feeling family love, just like her favorite movie ‘Barefoot Gi-bong’.” He added, “Before coming on stage, I talked with the director, and it doesn’t feel real that we are talking about the movie like this. I should have talked about the movie with my mother.” He paused for a moment, unable to continue.
He then said, “The movie that my mother wished for has come out, and I hope it will be screened during the Lunar New Year so that the whole family can watch it. It’s like the last gift my mother gave us.”
Shin Hyun-jun also mentioned, “My mother missed ‘Barefoot Gi-bong’, and she said that because we were happy while filming, it seems to be conveyed to the audience. She hoped that the audience would comfortably laugh and feel family love while watching the movie. So I felt it was my homework,” and revealed how ‘Ghost Police’ came to be.
He continued to mention a scene that hints at his mother (Kim Soo-mi) being struck by lightning, saying, “The second part was actually going to start with my mother getting struck by lightning and gaining superpowers. But my mother passed away like this,” showing tears.
Shin Hyun-jun added, “I actually debated whether to include the last scene or not. Now that my mother is no longer here. But after discussing with the director, we decided to keep it as it is and not touch any scene that my mother appeared in.”
Finally, he said, “I felt happiness while filming thanks to my mother. I hope ‘Ghost Police’ becomes a film where many audiences can comfortably laugh and feel family love, even if just for a moment, as my mother wished. I hope everyone remembers my mother a lot.”
‘Ghost Police’ will be released on the 24th.
