Director Bong Joon-ho's film 'Mickey 17' will end its theatrical run after just one month and will move to an online streaming platform.
According to the new releases list on Amazon Prime Video in the U.S. on the 6th (local time), 'Mickey 17' will be available on this platform on the 7th at 9 PM (Pacific Time). This marks the conclusion of its theatrical screening.
According to the movie box office tracking site Box Office Mojo, the film, which opened in 3,807 theaters in North America on the 7th of last month, saw a gradual decrease in the number of screens until the 4th, and over about a month, it recorded ticket sales of $44.68 million (approximately 65.3 billion won) in North America and $77.70 million (approximately 113.6 billion won) in other regions, totaling $122.38 million (approximately 178.9 billion won).
In South Korea, the cumulative audience number as of the 6th, according to the integrated ticketing system, was 2,998,372, with a cumulative revenue of approximately 29.6 billion won, indicating it did not achieve significant box office success.
U.S. media Variety reported that considering the share taken by theaters, the break-even point for the film's ticket sales is estimated to be around $300 million (approximately 438.5 billion won).
Additionally, industry estimates suggest that the total global ticket sales for 'Mickey 17' will be around $143 million (approximately 209 billion won), and the film's losses could reach about $80 million (approximately 116.9 billion won).
Ultimately, as 'Mickey 17' fails to exceed these industry estimates, the losses from its theatrical run may be even greater.
